Religious Controversy in Martin Scorsese's
The Last Temptation of Christ
This film, released in 1988, was considered one of the most protested films of all time. There are many reasons why certain groups, like fundamentalist Christians, found this movie blasphemous or shocking. Although it is clearly stated that the representation of Christ in this movie is a fictional account based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, it is his portrayal of Christ as more man than God which is considered unacceptable to certain believers. His moments of weakness and sins are presented very explicitly as the character of Jesus struggles with the weight of his responsibility. While there are many examples that make Jesus seem less than heavenly, it is the act of sinning that is such a hot button issue with the parties opposed to the film. Jesus is tempted to commit acts of violence, sexuality and desire. His "Last Temptation" is presented to him by Satan while dying on the cross. He presents Jesus with a life with Mary Magdalene, growing old as a family. It shows what Jesus's life may have been like (fictionally, of course) if he had not died for humanity's sins.
One of the most compelling issues is the character of Jesus himself and why certain groups found this portrayal so offensive. In the links found above, different aspects of this character are analysed and how it relates to other ideas.
